Explore Types of Transfer Credit
Transfer credit can come from several sources. Requirements vary depending on how and where you earned the credit.
Explore the categories below to find the information that applies to you.
Credit Earned at U.S. Colleges and Universities
Coursework completed at other accredited U.S. colleges and universities may be considered for transfer credit.
Course content, learning outcomes and instructional time, including applicable laboratory, clinical experience or observation hours, are considered when determining whether a course is equivalent to Hudson Valley coursework.
Courses that share at least 75% of the content of a Hudson Valley course may be considered equivalent. Courses without a direct Hudson Valley equivalent may still be eligible for transfer as elective credit or may be applied toward program requirements in accordance with college policy.
To be eligible for transfer, you generally must have earned a grade of C or better, equivalent to 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or at least 70%.
You may be asked to provide a course syllabus or course/topic outline to help determine whether a course is eligible for transfer.
Credit Earned Outside the United States
Coursework completed at colleges and universities outside the United States is evaluated using the same general criteria as coursework completed at U.S. institutions.
If you earned college credit or a degree outside the United States, you will need to submit a complete course-by-course educational credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluation service. Fees for credential evaluations vary by provider.
Course syllabi and topic outlines also may be requested to help determine whether previous coursework is eligible for transfer.

College Credit Recommendation Services and Military Credit
Transfer credit may be granted for eligible learning experiences, training and nontraditional programs and courses recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS).
This may include eligible military training documented through a Joint Services Transcript (JST).
Credit for Prior Learning and Life Experience
College-level knowledge isn't always acquired in a traditional classroom. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for knowledge gained through experiences such as:
- Employment
- Volunteer experience
- Non-credit courses
- Professional training
- Seminars and workshops
Students seeking credit through the Life Experience Program demonstrate their college-level learning through a portfolio. The academic department responsible for the course reviews the portfolio to determine whether credit may be awarded.
Not every course can be evaluated through the Life Experience Program, and the awarding of credit is determined by the appropriate academic department.
