Transfer Credit FAQs

Have questions about transferring your previous college credit to Hudson Valley? Start with these answers to some of the most common questions about transfer credit and the evaluation process.

Will Hudson Valley accept all of my credits from my previous college?

Not necessarily. Hudson Valley evaluates previous coursework to determine whether it meets transfer credit requirements and how eligible credit applies to your program.

Generally, coursework must have been successfully completed with a grade of C or better, equivalent to 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or at least 70%.

Course content, learning outcomes and instructional time also may be considered. A course syllabus or topic outline may be requested when more information is needed.

Some courses may transfer as direct equivalents of Hudson Valley courses, while others may transfer as elective credit or apply to another program requirement.

When will my transfer credits appear in my WIReD account?

Check your WIReD account three to four weeks after meeting with your academic advisor to see if your transfer credits have been applied. The evaluation process may take longer during peak periods or if additional information, such as a course syllabus or outline, is needed.

Getting started early and providing any requested course materials promptly can help the process move more smoothly.

How does the transfer credit evaluation process work?

After Hudson Valley receives your official transcript and you meet with your academic advisor, your previous coursework is reviewed to determine which courses may be eligible for transfer credit.

Courses with established equivalencies may already be identified in Hudson Valley's Transfer Evaluation System (TES) or through SUNY transfer resources. Courses without an established equivalency may require additional evaluation.

You may be asked to provide a syllabus, topic outline or other course information to help complete the review.

Learn How Transfer Credit Is Evaluated

Can I see which courses Hudson Valley has accepted in the past?

Yes. You can explore established course equivalencies using two resources:

Explore the SUNY Transfer Navigator

Search CollegeSource Transfer Evaluation System (TES)

These resources are intended as guides and may not include every course eligible for transfer. Your previous coursework will be officially evaluated by Hudson Valley.

Why might Hudson Valley ask for my course syllabus?

A syllabus or detailed course/topic outline provides additional information about what was taught in a course.

If Hudson Valley does not already have enough information to determine how a course compares with its own coursework, you may be asked to provide these materials as part of the evaluation.

Keeping copies of previous course syllabi and outlines can be helpful when transferring colleges.

Why didn't my course transfer?

There are several reasons a course may not be eligible for transfer or may not apply in the way you expected.

For example, the grade earned may not satisfy Hudson Valley's minimum requirements, the course may not meet transferability requirements, or the credit may not apply to a requirement within your particular academic program.

If additional information about the course is needed, you may be asked to provide a syllabus or course/topic outline.

Why doesn't my transfer course satisfy a SUNY General Education requirement?

SUNY General Education requirements have specific learning outcomes.

Not every course offered by a SUNY institution carries a SUNY General Education designation. A course may transfer to Hudson Valley without satisfying a General Education requirement. When a course from another SUNY institution already carries an applicable SUNY General Education designation, that designation may factor into the transfer evaluation.

Coursework from non-SUNY institutions may require additional information, such as a syllabus or course outline, so Hudson Valley can determine whether the course meets the applicable General Education requirements.

Why did my course transfer as an elective instead of a specific Hudson Valley course?

Not every transferable course has a direct Hudson Valley equivalent.

A course may be accepted as elective credit or applied to another appropriate program requirement even when it is not equivalent to a particular Hudson Valley course.

Your academic program also matters. Degree and certificate programs have their own course requirements, so receiving transfer credit does not necessarily mean that the course will satisfy a particular requirement within your chosen program.
