Summer Aid Details and Applications

If you will be a registered, matriculated student for summer 2023, you may be eligible for summer aid. Please read the information below carefully and submit any applicable applications.

Eligibility Requirements

If you do not meet the conditions listed below, you are not eligible for summer  financial aid. If you have questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at (518) 629-7150 for clarification.

  • I have a 2022-2023 FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office.
  • I am in an eligible degree/certificate program (matriculated) at Hudson Valley Community College for summer 2023.
  • I have scheduled summer 2023 courses that are applicable to my degree/certificate.

Pell Grants

Students will automatically be considered for summer Pell awards based on registration status.

If a student does not wish to receive a summer Pell award, they must notify the Financial Aid Office in writing.

To receive a Pell Grant award during the summer semester, a student enrolled in less than 6 credit hours must have remaining eligibility for the 2022-2023 aid year. If enrolled in 6 or more degree-applicable credit hours, a student may qualify for additional Pell Grant funds over the 2022-2023 yearly limit. If a student is enrolled in less than 6 credits and/or has exhausted 2022-2023 Pell eligibility, they should file a 2023-2024 FAFSA.
NOTE: All payments of Pell reduce a student’s remaining lifetime Pell limit. Additional information can be found in the [Loading Financial Aid section link…] of the College Catalog.

Loans

Federal Direct Student Loan

To receive a summer Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford loan a student must:

  • Have not already received the maximum loan amounts for the 2022-2023 aid year. Awards received at other institutions must be considered.
  • Register for and complete a minimum of 6 degree-applicable credit hours.
  • Submit a completed Federal Direct Summer Loan application.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan

Before applying for a PLUS loan, your student must have a valid FAFSA on file with Hudson Valley Community College and be eligible for federal financial aid. Your student must also be continually enrolled and participating in at least 6 degree-applicable credit hours for you to borrow this loan and receive disbursements.

Facts about the PLUS loan:

  • PLUS Loans can be borrowed to pay for your dependent student’s educational expenses.
  • A credit check will be performed when you apply online. Applicants who do not pass the credit check may be able to receive the loan if they obtain an endorser and complete mandatory PLUS loan counseling online at https://studentaid.gov/.
  • Borrowers must meet citizenship requirements and not be in default or owe a repayment to a Federal Student Aid program.
  • The yearly limit on a PLUS loan is equal to the student’s cost of attendance minus all other financial aid available (including but not limited to grants, scholarships, and federal student loans). Contact the Financial Aid Office for your limit.
  • Loan funds are applied to the student’s tuition account to pay any balance outstanding at the time of disbursement. Any remaining funds not used to pay a balance are refunded to the parent.
  • Any portion of the loan can be cancelled within 14 days after the parent is notified that the funds were credited to the tuition account, or by the first day of the payment period, whichever is later.
  • The interest rate on PLUS loans is currently 7.54% but is subject to change. Interest begins accruing with the first disbursement of funds.
  • There is an origination fee deducted from each disbursement of the loan to help reduce the cost of the loans. The fee is currently 4.228% but is subject to change.
  • Repayment begins within 60 days after the final loan disbursement for the period of enrollment for which the loan is borrowed. There is no grace period for these loans.
  • There are 3 repayment plans: Standard, Graduated and Income-Contingent Repayment.
  • There are tax incentives, such as deductions for student loan interest paid. Please see your accountant for information.
  • Under certain circumstances, borrowers may receive a deferment or forbearance on their loan, as long as the loan is not in default. Information on deferment and forbearance can be obtained by calling your loan service.

TAP Awards

If a student is interested in a TAP grant for summer, they must first file a 2022-2023 FAFSA and include Hudson Valley's school code of 2080 on the NYS Student Aid Payment Application for the summer 2023 semester. However, no approved summer TAP funds will be sent to the college by New York State HESC until October 2023. It may not be in the student's best interest to use a TAP award during summer, as students have a limited number of TAP awards available to them as undergraduate students. Please contact the Financial Aid Office with questions.

There are no APTS (Aid for Part-Time Study) funds or Excelsior Scholarships available for summer.
