How Transfer Credit Is Evaluated

Once you submit information about your previous coursework, Hudson Valley evaluates eligible credit to determine how it may apply toward your degree or certificate program.

Some courses already have established Hudson Valley equivalencies. Others may require additional review.

Submit Your Official Transcripts

Students who have completed college-level coursework at another institution must submit official transcripts to Hudson Valley.

Official transcripts allow the college to verify your previous coursework and begin determining which credits may apply toward your program.

Provide Additional Course Information if Requested

Keep copies of course syllabi, course descriptions and topic outlines from your previous institution.

If a course has not previously been evaluated, Hudson Valley may request this information to determine how the content and learning outcomes compare with a Hudson Valley course.

Providing requested course information can help evaluators make that determination.

Your Coursework Is Evaluated

Once all materials are submitted for review, the Transfer Services team sends your coursework to the appropriate academic department for evaluation. The department determines whether the coursework meets Hudson Valley’s transfer requirements and how it applies toward your academic program.

A course may:

  • Transfer as the direct equivalent of a specific Hudson Valley course.
NOTE: Courses that share at least 75% of the content of a Hudson Valley course may be considered equivalent.
  • Transfer as elective credit.
  • Apply to another appropriate program requirement.
  • Require additional information or evaluation before a determination can be made.
  • Be determined ineligible for transfer credit.

Not every transferred course will necessarily apply to a specific requirement within your program.

Once a decision is made, Transfer Services will notify your academic advisor, and any awarded credit will appear in your WIReD account.

Will My Credits Transfer?

You don't necessarily have to wait for your official evaluation to begin exploring how previous courses may transfer.

Two online resources can help you find established course equivalencies.

SUNY Transfer Navigator

If you attended another SUNY institution, use the SUNY Transfer Navigator to explore established course equivalencies.

Transfer Evaluation System (TES)

The Transfer Evaluation System (TES) from CollegeSource allows you to search established equivalencies for coursework completed at other institutions.

Search the CollegeSource Transfer Evaluation System (TES)

NOTE: SUNY Transfer Navigator and TES are intended as guides and may not include every course that has been or can be evaluated for transfer credit. Hudson Valley will officially evaluate your previous coursework to determine whether credit can be awarded and how eligible credit applies to your program of study.

How Transfer Credit Appears on Your Hudson Valley Record

Approved transfer credit appears on your Hudson Valley transcript with a T in the grade column. Grades earned at another institution are not included in the calculation of your Hudson Valley GPA.

The number of transfer credits that may be applied toward your program is also subject to Hudson Valley's Residency Policy.

Courses completed within the SUNY system that are designated as General Education or Transfer Path courses are transferred in accordance with the SUNY Seamless Transfer Policy when applicable program and grade requirements are met.

SUNY Transfer Credit Appeals

If you disagree with Hudson Valley’s decision regarding transfer credit earned at another SUNY institution or how that credit is applied toward your academic program, you may request an appeal.

Be prepared to provide documentation supporting your request, such as a course description or syllabus. A completed Transfer Credit Appeal Form (PDF) should be submitted to the Registrar's Office.

If you disagree with the college's decision following the appeal process, an additional appeal may be available through SUNY.
