Driver Education

This course is intended to educate students (age 16 or older) on appropriate driving skills and habits. Students must complete 24 hours of driving (under the supervision of a parent/guardian holding a valid New York State driver’s license) and attend all 24 hours of scheduled lecture classes in order to be eligible for the Motor Vehicle Certificate MV-285. If you know you have to miss a class for any reason, please wait and take this course at another time. One make-up session for an excused classroom absence with college approval is allowed for an additional $25 fee, and will be scheduled for 8/4.

A mandatory orientation for parents and students is scheduled for Thursday, 6/24 at 6p.m.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no on-campus component to the Driver Education program.  All lecture courses will be taught remotely via Zoom. Students must be visible via video during class and engaged in learning. Students will need their Hudson Valley username and password to access the course. Class meeting times will run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, 9 – 10:30 a.m. from 6/29 – 8/3.  Zoom sessions may not be recorded. If a student requires accommodations, they should contact the Center for Access and Assistive Technology.

Parents/guardians are responsible for completing the 24 hours of supervised driving to equal a minimum of six hours behind the wheel and a minimum of 18 hours of observation of the licensed driver. Parents/guardians who are providing in-car instruction must comply with NYS DMV regulations and standards.  The curriculum will be provided by Bells Driving School. Each week parents will be emailed a checklist of skills to be addressed during their supervised driving times with their parent/guardian. The completed checklists must be submitted electronically every week throughout the program.  Weekly driving lessons can occur at a schedule convenient to both the parent/guardian and student. Two lessons will be released weekly for a total of 3 hours of driving.  The first lesson will be released the week of 6/28 and the last lesson will be released the week of 8/16.

The MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion allows:

1. New York State junior permit holder to schedule a road test

2. Young drivers a possible reduction in automobile insurance cost (dependent upon insurance provider participation)

3. A 17-year-old to receive a senior license  (MV-285 must be submitted to local DMV to attain this benefit)
