You will be given a challenge, and teams will need to plan and create a design in order to complete the task successfully. The challenges will be open-ended and will encourage creativity and exploration! Course fee includes a $10 materials fee.

Technology Enrichment Grades 3 - 5

HVCC TEC-SMART Campus

345 Hermes Road, Malta

This program is comprised of six modules. Campers participate in all of these throughout the week.

Module 1: Rock Paper Scissors

Module 2: Shipwrecked

Module 3: Think Fast

Module 4: Whiz Kidz

Module 5: Science Fiction

Module 6: AstroExplorers in collaboration with NASA

Mad Science of the Capital District, Instructor

Rock Paper Scissors

Investigate the awesome inventions created before modern science had really begun. Learn about Leonardo da Vinci and discover how his ideas

predicted future inventions. Explore catapults, trebuchets, and more of his amazing inventions during this action-packed camp day.

Shipwrecked

Imagine finding yourself on a deserted island with only a few supplies.

What better way to inspire your own creations? Add into the day a tsunami and a volcano and see how resourceful you can be using Ben Franklin’s inventions as inspiration.

Think Fast

Inventors have always searched for a way to take flight. On today’s journey we will use early inventors like the Wright brothers to launch into the

wild blue yonder. The adventure starts on the ground and travels into space. Take flight during this fun-flying camp day.

Whiz Kidz

Team up with your fellow camp inventors to explore the inventions of others – such as kids, women, Rube Goldberg, and Thomas Edison. Draw inspiration from the “wacky” and the practical! The goal of this camp day is to understand that we have no limitations. Our dreams will inspire invention.

Science Fiction

Join the adventure to infinity and beyond on this fantastic day where science fiction meets science fact. As far back as Jules Verne and as recently as George Lucas, dreamers have explored what the future can hold. Many of those dreams are now reality. Sci-fi meets real inventors to help us explore how fiction can influence reality.

AstroExplorers in Collaboration with NASA

Prepare for an action-packed week where campers will think and act like NASA innovators. Campers will be challenged to use creative and collaborative skills to design a mission patch, train like an astronaut, and solve real-world engineering problems.

Armed with the spark of an idea, a design notebook, and physical and digital tools, teams will modify NASA technology into spinoff designs. Help campers ignite their creative thinking and shoot for the stars.

HVCC TEC-SMART Campus

This program is comprised of five modules. Campers participate in all of these throughout the week.

Module 1: Ready for Robots

Module 2: Circuit Science

Module 3: Use Your Common Sensors!

Module 4: Robots 101

Module 5: Advanced Robotics

Ready for Robots

Campers will explore the fundamentals of robotics and discover how robots are used, through activities and games. We will begin assembling our very own Kingii Dragon Robot kits that you will take home at the end of the week. What do gears and spirographs have in common with robots? We’ll find out, along with discovering how a “co-op-a-walk” works with your friends. Take home your very own squiggle ball and watch it do crazy turns.

Circuit Science

We will explore the “nuts and bolts” of robots as we build simple circuits, test them, and discover how switches work. You’ll try out a real robotic arm and construct your own scribble bot from scratch to take home!

Use Your Common Sensors!

We’ll discover how the world of robots is at your command, as they follow a line or listen to your words. Campers will build a system of snap circuits and play games that use their senses to communicate. You can build and take home your very own circuit maze.

Robots 101

Campers will learn about Asimov’s Law of Robotics and its application to robot technology. We will go on a bug hunt to learn how robots’ movements are similar to those seen in nature and, watch a model car drive right up the wall, and practice with a real robotic arm. Campers can take home a springy robot-like hand that you work with your fingers.

Advanced Robotics

Campers will use their imaginations to create their own robot designs and recycle materials to make a model of their design. Then, we’ll have a chance test it in our obstacle course. We’ll race remote control cars and discover how robots are programmed via a sequence of commands. At the end of the week, campers will take home their robot to continue exploring the world of robotics.
