Sculptor Paul Mauren will bring “Tracing Time,” an exhibition exploring the tension between opposing structures and images, to Hudson Valley Community College’s Teaching Gallery Thursday, Nov. 12. The exhibition will remain on view through Saturday, Dec. 12.

The Nov. 12 opening will include an artist talk by Mauren from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium, followed by a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Teaching Gallery. The exhibition, talk and reception are free and open to the public.

Mauren creates sculptures that bring together contrasting structures and images. His practice combines experimentation, traditional fabrication techniques and structural invention, reflecting the instability and vitality of both natural and built environments.

Mauren earned a bachelor’s degree in ceramics and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture and drawing from Eastern Michigan University. During graduate school, he received a teaching fellowship and worked as a studio assistant to sculptor John Pappas, helping create a six-ton bronze sculpture commissioned for the Blue Cross Blue Shield fountain in Detroit.

Mauren joined the faculty at The College of Saint Rose in Albany in 1978, teaching sculpture until 2018 and serving as chair of the Art Department from 2012 to 2015. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the Northeast and beyond, including Sculpture Center in New York City and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. “Tracing Time” marks his second exhibition in Hudson Valley’s Teaching Gallery; his work was previously featured in “Open Processes 3” in 2003.

Exhibitions in the Teaching Gallery are installed and assisted by students enrolled in Gallery Management courses. The Teaching Gallery’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday; and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is located on the ground floor of the Administration Building.
