Viking Child Care Center Celebrates 40 Years of Supporting Children and Families
August 20, 2026
Hudson Valley Community College’s Viking Child Care Center celebrated its 40th anniversary with a campus barbecue on Friday, Aug. 14. The milestone marks four decades of providing care and support to children and families in the college community, as well as 25 years in the center’s current facility.
Staff members and families joined representatives from the college’s Board of Trustees, the Faculty Student Association's Board of Directors, SUNY administrators and Office of Children and Family Services members for the celebration, which recognized the center’s longstanding role on campus.
The Viking Child Care Center provides safe, affordable and high-quality childcare for students, faculty, staff and community members with children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years old. More than 50 children are currently enrolled at the center.
The center offers a cognitively based program designed to meet each child’s need for play, companionship and individual attention. The flexible program recognizes children as individuals and provides opportunities for them to develop at their own pace.
“We are proud to celebrate this milestone and the generations of children, families and dedicated staff who have been part of its history,” said Hudson Valley Community College President Michael Brophy. “By providing high-quality, affordable childcare, the center helps remove a barrier for student-parents while also serving faculty, staff and families throughout our community.”
The 16,000-square-foot facility opened in 2001 and provides space designed to support the developmental and educational needs of young children. The center is operated by the Faculty Student Association of Hudson Valley Community College and is licensed by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
