HVCC Offers Two-Week Program to Support Students with Disabilities in College Transition

Hudson Valley Community College will host a program this summer for people with disabilities who are preparing for the transition to college.

Overcoming the Transition Barrier: Helping Individuals with Disabilities Prepare for College will be a two-week program held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays between July 28 and Aug. 6, 2026 at Hudson Valley Community College’s Fitzgibbons Health Technologies Center, Room 344.

Students do not have to be planning to attend Hudson Valley Community College to participate; instruction will be relevant to any college they might be attending.

Topics include:

  • Differences between high school and college and how to navigate them
  • Course loads and academic advisement
  • What to expect in college classes
  • How to navigate a college campus
  • Homework and grading
  • Understanding the schedule and what to do in free time
  • How to follow a syllabus
  • When to seek help and what resources are available for help
  • Getting set up with the college’s Center for Access and Assistive Technology and how to request accommodations
  • How to communicate with faculty
  • How to become part of the campus community
  • Self-awareness and self-advocacy

Register online on the Overcoming the Transition Barrier: Helping Individuals with Disabilities Prepare for College page by June 30. Space is limited. The cost is $225 and must be paid at time of registration.

Hudson Valley Community College serves more than 600 students with disabilities each year through its Center for Access and Assistive Technology (CAAT), which offers services to help students with pre-admission counseling, individual orientation, registration and admissions placement testing, obtaining classroom accommodations and notetakers, accessing specially designed adaptive and assistive technology equipment, academic progress monitoring, and general advocacy, as well as serving as a liaison with local, state and federal agencies as well as with faculty and offices on campus.
