The Rensselaer County Legislature has appointed Harry J. Tutunjian of Troy to the Hudson Valley Community College Board of Trustees. His term will extend through 2029.

Tutunjian is a longtime public servant and former mayor of the City of Troy, where he served two terms from 2004 to 2011. Notably, he was mayor during President Obama’s 2009 visit to the campus. “I had the honor of welcoming him to Troy, and he even remembered our conversation during his remarks,” Tutunjian recalled. “He joked about my calculus studies in the room where we were taking a photo, using it as an example of what can be achieved thanks to an institution like Hudson Valley.”

A 1989 alumnus of Hudson Valley Community College, Tutunjian earned an associate degree in Banking, Insurance, and Real Estate, and also studied Electrical Engineering Technology.

In addition to his public service career, Tutunjian has extensive experience in the local business community. He successfully owned and operated his family’s business, Naz’s Body Shop, for many years, and now manages Arax Properties LLC, a real estate company focused on commercial development in the Town of Brunswick.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to the college that played a pivotal role in my education and career,” Tutunjian said. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow trustees to support the college’s mission and ensure its continued success for future generations of students.”

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Harry Tutunjian to our Board of Trustees,” said Hudson Valley Community College President Michael Brophy. “As both an alumnus and former mayor, Harry has a deep understanding of the needs of our community. His extensive experience in both the public and private sectors will provide invaluable perspective, and I look forward to his contributions to the board.”

The college’s 10-member Board of Trustees is appointed by the governor, who names four members, and the Rensselaer County Legislature, which appoints five members to serve seven-year terms. One member is elected by the student body for a one-year term.
