The award, presented annually during the Athletic Department’s Community Day activities, honors an individual whose commitment, professionalism and humility reflect the character and work ethic of Louis Coplin, a longtime administrative leader at the college who retired after 39 years of service.

Rodriguez has been a vital member of the campus community since 2009 and an active volunteer. As part of the nursing faculty, she led the development of Hudson Valley’s simulation course, transforming the college’s approach to nursing education.

She has also served as advisor for the Niemond Zonders Nursing Club since 2022, guiding and expanding its community outreach efforts. Under her leadership, the club launched a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser in 2024, raising more than $35,000 in two years for pediatric cancer research. The club will again support pediatric cancer research by hosting the 2026 St. Baldrick’s Carnival Fundraiser on Saturday, April 25.

Niemond Zonders also participates in a wide range of community events, such as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and gift wrapping at Crossgates Mall. Students also provide blood pressure screenings, cardiovascular health education, hand hygiene demonstrations and cold and flu prevention education throughout the community.

Hudson Valley President Michael Brophy said the institution is grateful to have faculty members like Rodriguez who go above and beyond to support students.

“Kate’s work reflects the very best of our college,” President Brophy said. “Her leadership in the classroom, her commitment to student success and her dedication to her community make a lasting impact on our campus.”

The Louis Coplin Community Award was established in 2025 in honor of Coplin, who held many roles in his tenure with Hudson Valley from 1986-2025, including Educational Opportunity Program director, director of student life, vice president for student affairs and officer in charge.
