College Hosts Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program for Fifth Consecutive Year
February 12, 2026
Hudson Valley Community College will again partner with the United Way of the Greater Capital Region to bring the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to campus, offering free tax preparation to eligible community. This marks the fifth year the college has served as a host site for the national IRS‑supported initiative.
VITA provides no‑cost federal and state tax preparation for individuals and families who meet program eligibility requirements. The initiative also offers an important experiential learning opportunity for Hudson Valley students: several Accounting and Business Administration students have completed IRS training and certification to serve as volunteer preparers.
“VITA gives our students direct exposure to the kind of work they may pursue after graduation,” said Ricky Thibodeau, chair of the Business and Criminal Justice Department. “It allows them to build professional skills while contributing meaningful service to our community. We’re proud to support the program again this year.”
Tax preparation sessions will be held in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center, Room 216, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the following Fridays:
- Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27
- March 6, 13, 27
- April 10
Participants should check in at the lobby on the first floor of the Bulmer Center upon arrival.
The VITA program is available to students, faculty, staff and community members who meet eligibility guidelines. Key criteria include:
- Annual income of $69,000 or less
- No rental income
- No bankruptcy filed during the tax year
- No self‑employment income involving inventory
- Additional qualifications may apply
Appointments are required. Individuals may schedule online at www.getfreetaxprep.org, or call Catholic Charities Tri‑County Services at (518) 507‑5353 for assistance.
