The primary responsibility of the History, Philosophy and Social Sciences
Department is to serve as a service department for the entire college
electives as well as required courses for specific department curricula.
The History, Philosophy and Social Sciences
Department services the needs of
other departments on campus by providing quality instruction and flexibility
in developing new courses as needed or revising existing courses. While
some students who complete courses within the department are in terminal
programs, the vast majority of students plan to transfer to four year
schools. Therefore, ensuring the transferability of department courses
is an ever present concern.
The department currently has 20 full time faculty and 76 part time faculty
members, most of whom teach in the evening school. Faculty
teach 507 sections of courses with an average of 28 students
per section, providing 14,196 seats for students each year.
