TEC-SMART is also home to the Clean Technologies and Sustainable Industries Early College High School (ECHS), a partnership with the Ballston Spa Central School District. This program is designed to develop and support pathways to higher education
in renewable energy, entrepreneurship, computer information
science and semiconductor manufacturing for high school
students throughout the Capital Region.
Students take courses at TEC-SMART for half the day and
finish up with regular high school courses in their schools for
the remainder of the day. Graduates may earn up to 20 college
credits, in addition to a high school diploma.
In 2014, the Early College High School was awarded a New York
State P-Tech Grant (Pathways in Technology Grant) to assure its
continuation. Aimed at preparing more than 6,000 high school
students for high-skill jobs in technology and manufacturing,
P-Tech works with local partners who provide mentoring, job
shadowing, workplace visits and field experience to the students.
ECHS offers four pathways to higher education: Renewable
Energy, Entrepreneurship, Computer Information Science and
Community Education and Engagement
TEC-SMART serves as a central location where the community
can learn about energy issues and green technologies,
helping to increase awareness of the need for and availability
of clean energy sources. School groups, community organizations
and businesses visit TEC-SMART with increasing frequency for
programs and information sessions.
TEC-SMART regularly hosts
external groups who use
the facility to host meetings
and seminars. These groups
Local Workforce Investment
Boards and Regional Economic Development Councils also utilize the meeting space.
TEC-SMART is also a hub for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (STEM) education events for
elementary, middle and high school groups, including a
targeted workshop to introduce girls to STEM.
