Student AI Resources
AI tools can be great study aids. They can explain tough ideas, help you brainstorm, and give quick feedback. But they’re not perfect — they can be wrong, biased, or confusing. That’s why the college’s Acceptable Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy in the [Loading Policies and Procedures section of the College Catalog link…] asks all of us to use these tools responsibly and thoughtfully.
Here’s the big picture:
- You’re always the one in charge of your learning.
- AI helps, but it does not replace your own thinking.
- You must follow your instructor’s directions about AI for each class.
- Never share personal or sensitive information with AI tools unless it’s a college‑approved system.
Academic Integrity & AI Basics
HVCC values honesty and original thinking. Using AI is not automatically cheating, but hiding AI use or using it when it isn’t allowed is a form of academic misconduct under the college’s Academic Ethics Code.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Your instructor sets the rules. Each course may be different.
- Be honest about using AI. If AI helped shape your ideas, wording, images, or code, cite it.
- Never use AI on exams, quizzes, or other “no help” assignments.
- You are responsible for checking that AI’s information is correct.
- AI‑detection tools aren’t perfect. Instructors won’t rely on them alone but may ask questions if something looks off.
A helpful habit is keeping a short “AI use note”:
“I used ChatGPT to explain this concept and generate practice questions. I checked all information against my course notes.”
Keeping Your Information Safe
The college’s AI Policy is very clear: Do not upload personal, private, or sensitive information into AI tools unless the college has officially approved the tool for that purpose.
Don’t Share This With AI
- Your name, HVCC ID, address, phone number, or personal email address
- Grades
- Disability or health information
- Financial aid information or Social Security numbers
- Classmates’ names
- Photos or videos of yourself or others
How AI Tools Handle Your Text
Many AI tools store prompts, even if you delete them. Unless you’re in an approved college system, assume anything you paste could be saved somewhere.
Safer Ways to Use AI
- Remove names and details
- Share only short, non‑sensitive excerpts
- Keep the text minimal
- Always verify facts in your textbook or notes
- Save final work in HVCC systems (not AI chats)
AI Literacy Module in Brightspace
The college has developed an AI literacy module in Brightspace that introduces the basics of AI. Your instructor may include this module in your Brightspace course.
