What is Art For? with Laudelina Martinez

HVCC welcomes Laudelina Martinez to campus as part of its Voices: A Library Lecture Series.

We live surrounded by art and design, yet often remain distant from an awareness of their meaning and effect on us. This talk will explore the significance of art, its connection to our bodies, its role in expressing and revealing culture, and its impact on the economy. As a group, we will consider the value of art, whether it is inherently good, and the functions it serves. Because this presentation takes place during Women’s History Month, we will highlight artists identified by history as women and use their work as examples. Attendees will be invited to participate in discussion throughout the presentation.

Laudelina Martinez is the founder and director of Martinez Gallery, a contemporary art gallery established in 2001 in Troy, New York. She has curated more than 100 exhibitions for the gallery and other venues. A major focus of her curatorial work has been to present and advance established and emerging Latino artists. Her lifelong involvement in the arts began in her formative years, studying ballet, Spanish dance, piano and theater under distinguished instructors. She chose a career in higher education but has continued her commitment to the arts.

Martinez served as president and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) from 1992 to 1995, during which she secured the enactment of the federal law that established Hispanic‑serving institutions.

This free, public event will also be livestreamed for those not able to attend in-person.
