Hudson Valley Community College Line Worker Program Wins National Grid Chairman's Award
Program fosters employment, addresses workforce needs and supports National Grid's "Engineering our Future" Initiative

Albany, N.Y., April 7, 2010 - The Overhead Electric Line Worker Certificate program created by Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) and National Grid to fill workforce needs in the Capital Region is the recipient of the 2010 National Grid Chairman's award for community contribution.

In the first two years of the program, 15 graduates have been hired directly into National Grid's overhead line department and several other graduates have been hired into other parts of the company. The HVCC effort is part of National Grid's "Engineering Our Future" initiative to grow and develop talent by supporting comprehensive learning programs.

"The HVCC Overhead Electric Line Worker Program provides exceptional training to the community with unique employment opportunities, while at the same time, helping National Grid and other utilities develop a well-educated future workforce through the 'Engineering Our Future' initiative," said Tom King, President of National Grid in the U.S. "The program has been the model for similar training that is now being offered in community colleges throughout National Grid's upstate New York market area."

Anticipating a shortage of line workers due to retirements, National Grid and HVCC created the Overhead Electric Line Worker Certificate program in 2007 to help fill workforce needs. The program is the first State University of New York - approved Overhead Electric Line Worker Certificate program and is offered through the college's School of Engineering and Industrial Technologies.

The program consists of new and existing courses in the electrical Construction and Maintenance A.O.S. degree program. These courses include electricity, technical math, electrical wiring and industry specific electric power. The college's new Overhead Electric Line Worker Laboratory in Williams Hall provides students with hands-on experience. National Grid provided and installed a series of utility poles and transformers in the laboratory, which are wired together to simulate an actual job site.

Eight National Grid employees who helped create the Overhead Electric Line Worker Certificate program were recognized with National Grid's Chairman's Awards for community contribution at a reception at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens in March. The awards dinner honors exceptional programs throughout National Grid's global business in six categories.

The Community Contribution award winner team members are: Keith McAfee, Vice President Customer Operations, Eastern Division; William Flaherty, Regional Executive Director, Eastern Division Energy Solution Services; Leonard Fiume, Director, Protection & Telecom Operations Management; Patrick Stella, Senior Media Relations Representative; Scott Barbour, Senior Training Representative; Judith Dunn, Director, Business Gas Partners in Upstate New York; Brian Kilgallon, Assistant Business Manager, IBEW Local 97; Sean Donohue, Business Representative, IBEW Local 97 and Kevin Lyons, Business Representative, IBEW Local 97.

National Grid is taking action to address the challenge of workforce development with its innovative and comprehensive "Engineering Our Future" initiative to inspire youth and attract and develop utility workers. National Grid already has invested more than $3 million in this program to target students of all ages and backgrounds to encourage them to study science, technology, engineering and math, collectively known as "STEM."

The Chairman's Awards, established in 2000, recognize the outstanding efforts and achievements of National Grid employees. They provide an opportunity to share best practice and provide visibility of local initiatives taking place across the company in six categories: safety, health, environment, community contribution, customer delivery and inclusion and diversity. National Grid employees submitted 246 entries for the recognition and a panel of judges selected a winner in each category.
