Nusantara Arts Balinese Gamelan Workshop
Learn the art of Balinese gamelan in this hands-on workshop with world‑renowned musician, composer, and Nusantara Arts Guest Artist Director Gusti Komin Darta!
Komin is one of the most well‑regarded and talented Balinese musicians living in the United States. He is one of the few teachers who knows the traditional Balinese gamelan Semar Pegulingan repertoire played on Nusantara Arts’ instruments, and he is also highly skilled in the Barong dance.
Komin is from Pengosekan village in Bali and comes from a family of musicians. As a child, he went to temples to watch his father perform and began learning many instruments. He learned in the traditional Balinese way — at home, in the temple, and in the community through experiences with close family and friends. He became known as a virtuoso player and helped found one of the most famous Balinese performing arts ensembles, Çudamani.
For the last 10 years, Komin has lived in New York, teaching at colleges such as MIT, Bucknell, and Queens College, as well as with community groups such as Dharma Swara.
