The Hidden Life of Spices: Earth's Edible Treasures
Join the HVCC Chemistry Club for a virtual presentation from the American Chemical Society (ACS) entitled “The Hidden Life of Spices: Earth’s Edible Treasures.”
Part of the ACS Program-in-a-Box series, this presentation explores the chemistry behind the spices we use every day. Discover how chemical compounds such as capsaicin (the heat in peppers) and myristicin (the aroma and taste of nutmeg) shape the flavors and aromas we experience. Learn how subtle structural differences in these chemicals influence taste and smell — and how spices have also been used as dyes, medicines, and more.
The program coincides with this year’s theme for National Chemistry Week (Oct. 19–25, 2025). Participant materials provided by the ACS will be shared with our chapter.
All are welcome to attend!
