Hudson Valley Community College Breaks Ground on $35 Million High-Technology Science Center; Outlines Plans for $19 Million in Renovations
New facilities place college at forefront of bio-manufacturing and biotechnology training

Hudson Valley Community College broke ground today in a ceremonial celebration of the construction of its new technologically-advanced science center.

Construction of the $35 million, 100,000-square-foot center began this summer and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2013. Plans also were outlined for renovations and upgrades to Amstuz Hall and Fitzgibbons Health Technologies Center, other science-related areas, for which another $19 million in funding was secured by the college in conjunction with this new project.

Twenty-five fully equipped state-of-the-art laboratories in the new science center will provide for the study of biology, chemistry, physics, biotechnology, earth science and forensics. The center also will house 11 classrooms, faculty and staff offices, conference spaces, a science study center and a greenhouse. The building will offer students the opportunity to explore emerging technologies and master the use of cutting-edge equipment in preparation for continuing their education at leading colleges and universities throughout the country or entering the workforce in various scientific capacities.

Rensselaer County and the State of New York each contributed $27 million in funding for the project.

"Hudson Valley has always embraced progress, and continues to move forward in specialized scientific arenas with this new Science Center. Recognizing that innovation in science is key to the 21st century, we will be offering students the tools they need for a critical science education," said Hudson Valley Community College President Andrew J. Matonak.

The college recognizes that the Capital Region is continuing to grow as a biotechnology/bio-manufacturing hub, with increasing demands for qualified scientists and technicians. Hudson Valley's science programs, including Biotechnology, Biological Science, Physical Science and Environmental Science, are an integral link between the companies seeking skilled employees and those seeking training and employment.

Since 2005, the college has seen an enrollment increase of 30 percent in biology, chemistry and physics courses, and the number of course sections being taught has increased 26 percent. Our highly respected science program graduates bring a solid educational foundation to the job market or to other institutions of higher learning. Graduates are qualified to find employment locally with such institutions as Albany Medical Center, Albany Molecular Research Institute, Atotech, GlobalFoundries, Regeneron, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University at Albany Biotech Center, NYS Police Forensics Investigations Center and Wadsworth Labs.

In an era that demands attention to environmental responsibility, the center is planned to achieve LEED Silver-certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The center will feature stringent air quality control, day lighting, energy and water conservation systems and reduced carbon emissions in its operation. The college's TEC-SMART facility in Malta recently received LEED Platinum-certification, the highest certification awarded by the LEED program. Hudson Valley is one of only seven community colleges in the nation, the first community college in New York State, and one of only four colleges altogether in NYS to achieve Platinum-certification, joining the ranks of Rochester Institute of Technology, Ithaca College and Cooper Union.

Mosaic Associates of East Greenbush, a firm that has been in business since 1865 and specializes in the design of educational facilities, collaborated on the design of the building with science facility design firm Payette of Boston. Other consultants include RG Vanderweil and Capital Region-based Ryan-Biggs and The LA Group.

U.W. Marx Construction Company is the project manager, administering from conceptual stage through planning, the design, construction, start-up and contract close-out of the overall project. U.W. Marx's responsibilities also include general program management, financial management, scheduling, planning, procurement, design management and construction management.

A number of other firms will partner to complete the facility, including Jerson Construction Group, LLC; Stone Bridge Iron & Steel, Inc.; AFI Glass & Architectural Metal, Inc.; Bette & Cring, LLC; Campito Plumbing & Heating, Inc.; T. Lemme Mechanical, Inc.; Comalli Group, Inc.; Spencer-Virnoche, Inc.; Ryan-Biggs Associates, P.C.; and Condor Fire Sprinkler, LLC.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 associate degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and workforce and academic preparation programs offered through the Educational Opportunity Center. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of nearly 14,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining. Hudson Valley has more than 65,000 alumni.
