The Mechanical Engineering Technology degree provides you with practical, hands-on experience, and prepares you to enter the workforce as a mechanical engineering technician or offers the opportunity to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Mechanical engineering technicians are problem solvers who study system design, and the production, installation and monitoring of products. You will learn how and why a system or mechanism works by studying materials, strength of materials, machine design, computer aided drafting and microcomputer applications.
Graduates may choose to enter the workforce or continue their education at a four year-college.
This program is offered by the Civil, Construction, Industrial and Mechanical Technologies Department.
Entrance and Course Requirements
- The program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (www.abet.org).
- The program provides students with a strong foundation in mathematics, physics and related technology subjects.
Graduates of the program are in high demand by Capital Region industries who are in the manufacturing or product service industries. They are prepared to work as mechanical engineering technicians, and often are given tasks related product testing, research and design working under the supervision of an engineer or product designer.
Many MET graduates transfer to engineering technology programs at four-year colleges or universities to earn bachelor's degrees. SUNY Polytechnic and Rochester Institute of Technology are among the most popular transfer schools.
Career titles for graduates include: Mechanical Engineering Technician, Automation Technician, Certified Control Systems Technician, Design Engineer.
