Valatie resident honored at Hudson Valley Community College

\"ImageRyan Akers of Valatie, an Engineering Science graduate at Hudson Valley Community College, was recently honored with the George Baker Award for Excellence in Mathematics, which is given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average in the college's Engineering Science and Math Science curricula.

Professor George Baker began his career at Hudson Valley Community College in the fall of 1955 and rose to full professor in 1965. In 1966, he was appointed Department Chair after a year of serving as Acting Chair. During his tenure, the Mathematics and Science and Engineering Science programs were developed.

Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 50 degree and certification programs in four academic divisions: Liberal Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Business; as well as programs run through the Educational Opportunities Center offering certification programs in workforce and academic preparation. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
