Jessica Memole, a Rensselaer resident and recent Hudson Valley Community College graduate, was recently presented with "The English Department Four L Award: Celebrating Language, Literature, Learning and Laughter."
The one-time English honorarium was given in honor of five English department retirees – professors George Drew, Maureen Hood, Peter Nicpon, James Slattery and John Roy. The award recognizes a graduating student who excelled in at least four English courses. Additionally, the recipient must exemplify some of qualities of the recent retirees, including: humor; creativity; zest for learning; and compassion for others.
Memole graduated with honors from Hudson Valley's Individual Studies program. She plans to attend The College of Saint Rose next and work toward a master's degree in English. A member of Hudson Valley's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, she also hopes to publish some of her poetry and fiction.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
