Schodack Landing Student Garth Scannell Honored by Hudson Valley Community College \"Photo

\"GarthGarth Scannell of Schodack Landing, a 2009 graduate of Hudson Valley Community College’s Engineering Science program, was honored by the college with a departmental award.

Scannell received the Joseph J. Smith Engineering and Science Award to RPI, which is given to an outstanding graduate of the Engineering Science program who plans to pursue study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Scannell will study materials engineering at RPI. He was named to the President\'s List each of his four semesters at Hudson Valley and also received a Presidential Honors Scolarship, a Lockheed Martin Scholarship and the Donald D. and Mary E. Heckleman Scholarship. He served as president of the Engineering Science Club and as a peer tutor in math. A ham radio operator, Scannell also is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Phi Theta Kappa and serves as pipe sergeant in the Capital Region Celtic Pipeband.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 associate’s degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and also sponsors an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 60,000 alumni.
