Hudson Valley Community College Announces Major Gifts Campaign
Ambitious Fundraising Initiative is First Such Endeavor in 55-year History

Troy, NY -- Hudson Valley Community College today announced a $10-million goal for its first major gifts campaign and most ambitious fundraising effort in the college’s 55-year history. Fundraising for the campaign, The Promise of Our Region: The Campaign for the Community, began in Fall 2006. To date, pledges and gifts have reached the $3.1-million mark.
In addition to these pledges, the campaign’s Honorary Chairman, James Barba who is President and CEO of Albany Medical Center, announced today that Albany Medical Center has committed $175,000 per year for at least 10 years, starting in 2009, to expand the college’s nursing program.
The campaign announcement was made by Hudson Valley Community College President Andrew J. Matonak and Mr. Barba. In attendance at the kickoff were business and community leaders, as well as members of the Hudson Valley Community College Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, and college administrators. Following the remarks, the group toured various locations on campus that showcased campaign target areas.
“Our vision for Hudson Valley Community College is to deliver what the future demands for the rapidly transforming Capital Region,” said President Matonak. “As our state and local communities continue to have stresses on their budgets, it is important for the college to be able to reach out and garner private support so that we can maintain a margin of excellence.”
“The Promise of Our Region is truly a campaign for the community,” stated Mr. Barba, who employs hundreds of the college’s graduates. “If the Capital Region is to have the learning environments, instructional quality and affordable programs that changing economic times demand, then we must invest in Hudson Valley Community College. We simply can not do without it. I am honored to be the Honorary Chairman.”
Campaign program initiatives include:
- the expansion of the college’s nursing program to graduate 50 percent more registered nurses. There is a waiting list of more than 200 students because of the college’s inability to expand this costly program;
- the construction of a state-of the-art automotive model dealership and training facility to expand the number of graduates from our automotive programs;
- the creation of an endowment fund to support the expansion of our Second Chance Scholarship Program to serve 25 more students challenged by life’s responsibilities and hardships as they pursue higher education;
- the development of synthetic-turf athletic fields to expand both the sports seasons for our student athletes and capacities to serve a wider range of community events; and
- the building of additional endowments to support our Maureen Stapleton Theatre, the college’s newly opened fine arts Teaching Gallery, the college’s Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement, and high-cost academic programs in Dental Hygiene; Engineering, Energy and Building Systems; and the Allied Health Sciences.
“Hudson Valley Community College is the automotive school at the college level for the Capital Region. But we know they are maxed out; bursting at the seams. They need a new facility, new technology and much more space to train students,” said Deborah Dorman, President of the Eastern New York Coalition of Automotive Retailers (ENYCAR), a trade association that represents 95 new car retailers and affiliated businesses.
The planning for the Campaign began with a feasibility study, which took place in Summer 2006. During the study, 50 individuals – including business and community leaders from throughout the Capital Region, as well as Hudson Valley employees and retirees – were interviewed. Results of the feasibility study showed overwhelming support for the college and recommended the college proceed with a major gifts campaign.
The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation formed in 1983 to philanthropically support the college’s mission. Gifts from alumni, corporations and friends are used to enhance programs, facilities and scholarship opportunities. The Foundation manages an endowment of $5 million. Philanthropic support to Hudson Valley Community College and its charitable foundation totaled $912, 672 during the 2006-07 academic year.
Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 associate’s degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences, as well as programs run through the Educational Opportunity Center offering certification programs in workforce and academic preparation. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, and it is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining. Hudson Valley has more than 65,000 alumni.
