Former Hudson Valley Community College student-athlete Darnell Stapleton signed a free agent contract with the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers immediately following the completion of the 2007 NFL Draft.
Stapleton, who played football at Hudson Valley in 2003 and 2004, was a Rimington Award finalist as one of the top collegiate centers this past fall as he helped Rutgers University to its second consecutive bowl appearance.
Stapleton played tackle for two years at Hudson Valley, helping the Vikings to consecutive Northeast Football Conference championships and the 2003 Graphic Edge Bowl.
Stapleton is the second former Hudson valley student-athlete to be invited to an NFL camp this year. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Former Hudson Valley baseball player Rashad Barksdale in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Sunday. If he makes the team, Stapleton can become the fourth former Hudson Valley student-athlete to play in the NFL, joining Jay Kearney, Leander Knight and Mark Catano.
