FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Thursday, March 15, 2001

From March 15 through May 31, a large group of colleges from around New York State, including Hudson Valley Community College, are sponsoring the New York State (NYS) Virtual Job Fair. This is the second year the event has been conducted. Last year's version was the largest virtual job fair in the country, with more than 500 organizations participating. The event generated 6,000 hits from job candidates, resulting in hundreds of placements.

The NYS Virtual Job Fair is a an entirely Internet-based job fair, specifically targeting students and alumni from New York State public and private colleges and universities. Thousands of students and alumni from more than 170 New York State colleges and universities will be invited to use the NYS Virtual Job Fair to search for permanent, part-time and internship positions.

"This is a great opportunity for students and alumni who might be short on time," said Mark Schmiedeshoff, a NYS Virtual Job Fair representative and director of Hudson Valley's Career Planning and Placement program. "You can take advantage of this online job fair at any time, day or night. The doors never close."

The job fair works like this: employers submit information about their organization and hiring needs, and candidates search and submit resumes through the Web site (, which will be a featured site at more than 150 campuses, including Hudson Valley.

"This virtual job fair program is a cutting-edge recruitment tool and has been very valuable for Verizon," said Janet Krause, a recruiter for Verizon. "It helped us in hiring 66 New York State college graduates last year."

"We are always looking for ways to recruit that are potent and cost-effective," added Chuck Reader, general manager of the Adams Mark Hotel in the Buffalo area. "The New York State Virtual Job Fair is a great one."

Beginning March 15, students and alumni of participating schools can log on to the above-mentioned Web site for free and view jobs geographically, by the type of job, by the background and experience required, as well as other categories. Students also will be able to e-mail resumes and cover letters. Additional contact information will be available.

Students and alumni who are interested in participating should contact Mark Schmiedeshoff at (518) 629-7326 or Interested businesses can register at
