Hudson Valley Community College Announces New Dean: Dehlly Porras, Ed.D. Formerly of CUNY

Dehlly Porras, Ed.D. has been hired as the new Dean of the Schools of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Health Sciences at Hudson Valley Community College, President John L. Buono announced today.

"We are fortunate to welcome Dehlly Porras to our ranks," said Buono. "She has been a tremendous asset at the City University of New York for more than two decades, and is bringing her considerable talents and experience to work for us."

Dr. Porras has worked in the Division of Academic Affairs at LaGuardia Community College through the City University of New York (CUNY) system since 1978. She also has worked for Ventures in Education Systems Corporation since 1999 as a Pedagogy Consultant.

Since 1992, she has served simultaneously as the Director of the International Studies Program and as Director of Interdepartmental Math Projects at CUNY, and also has been a long-time Mathematics faculty member. In International Studies, she assisted the president and vice president in international initiatives, including the establishment of the first community college in the Dominican Republic.

In her capacity as Director of Interdepartmental Math Projects, she has initiated, maintained and evaluated curricular and pedagogical initiatives pairing Mathematics with English as a Second Language, Reading, Accounting, Computers, Critical Thinking, General Psychology and Science. She has recruited, trained and provided professional development opportunities, and supervised and evaluated faculty participating in learning communities. She was selected as an evaluator for the U.S. Department of Education and evaluated 15 nationwide grant applications for the Upward Bound/Math Science Program.

Since 1990, she also has served as project director for the New York State Vocational Education Grants in the Mathematics Department. She previously worked as a Mathematics professor and Coordinator of Mathematics Skills Program at CUNY.

Dr. Porras was a visiting professor of Mathematics at the Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia from 1991-1992. From 1976-1980, she worked at the Population Division of the United Nations, gathering and analyzing worldwide statistical data.

She has been active on numerous committees on the CUNY campus, ranging from the Tenure Review Committee to the Economic Development Committee, as well as several Mathematics Department committees.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
