New Tourism, Convention and Event Management Course of Study Now Offered at Hudson Valley

College's Marketing program tailored to serve growing field

Students interested in pursuing a career in the tourism, convention and event management industry can now earn a Marketing degree at Hudson Valley Community College that is geared specifically toward that growing field.
The college recently received state approval to offer a Tourism, Convention and Event Management option within its existing Marketing program, which is one of seven degree programs offered through the School of Business.
Students can begin studying toward this new option during the Spring 2005 semester, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, by taking core courses offered through the Marketing program. In addition, three new courses have been developed exclusively for the Tourism, Convention and Event Management option – Introduction to Convention and Events, Events Management, and Tourism and Resorts.
"This is yet another way that Hudson Valley Community College is responsive to the community and changes in the marketplace," said Ann Marie Murray, Ph.D., Dean of the college's School of Business. "Also, as the Tech Valley initiative grows, so will the need for these types of jobs, which will be essential to the local economy."
Case in point: the Schenectady County Legislature recently created a $40,000-a-year position of special events coordinator to develop programs that draw tourists to the area. The city of Albany also has a nine-person Office of Special Events that administers an annual budget of more than $700,000.
Tourism also is a major element of the Capital Region's economic base, with the region at the center of some of the most popular recreational and resort areas in the Northeast. In addition, the federal Department of Labor lists the projected 2002-2012 employment change for the meeting and convention planners industry as faster than average.
"We looked at what was happening in the area, and we knew this would meet a need," said Marketing Department Chair Karen Marbot, who was integral in the creation of the new option. She has extensive event and conference planning experience both locally and in the Pacific Northwest.
"Also, we are not just looking to attract new students," Murray said. "We want to present our current students with options and choices, perhaps in an arena they hadn't thought of."
Marbot and Murray said the college is currently exploring articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities, which would allow Hudson Valley students pursuing this new course of study to transfer seamlessly to a baccalaureate program.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 60 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Liberal Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Business; as well as programs run through the Educational Opportunity Center offering certification programs in workforce and academic preparation.
