Photographer Sue Gersten will present an artist's lecture about her exhibit, "Cuba 2000," on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Marvin Library at Hudson Valley Community College. Gersten's selection of photographs from her trip to Cuba will be featured in the gallery from Nov. 11 through Dec. 13. The LRC Gallery is located in the Marvin Library on the Hudson Valley Community College campus at 80 Vandenburgh Ave., Troy. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call 629-7170.
During the lecture, Gersten will discuss the people of Cuba; the cigar factory she spent two days photographing; Jewish synagogues she visited; food and rationing; antique cars and general transportation; and more. She will answer any questions from the audience. Gersten recently returned from an excursion to Cuba as a guest of the Cuban Ministry of Culture. There, she studied with world-class photographer Bob Krist, meeting each morning at the Convent de Santa Clara in Havana before heading out to take shots of the people and landscape. Gersten's main photographic interests during the trip included three Jewish synagogues and two large Jewish cemeteries.
Gersten plans to return to Cuba in February 2001. She has offered to mail images of shots taken in the Jewish cemeteries to interested parties for only the cost of postage. Individuals who have ancestors of Jewish descent in Cuba can submit their requests to Gersten.
Gersten is a winner of local, national and international Kodak Newspaper Snapshot awards. Her photos have been on exhibit at the National Geographic Explorers Hall in Washington, D.C. and at EPCOT Center in Orlando, FL. Her photographs have been featured in Close Up on the Capital Region and other books. She has exhibited widely in this region, has been a featured guest on Good Morning America as well as several local affiliate stations, and has won many other local and regional awards. Gersten has studied with such notable photographers as Ruth Bernhard, Arnold Newman, Dennis Reggie, Joyce Tennison, Douglas Kirkland, Jill Enfield and Tom Knight.
Gersten said, "In my photography, I try to capture the unique 'essence' that I believe is inherent in each subject whether it is an abstract compilation, a formal portrait or a landscape." Gersten added, "My sincere hope is to someday return to Cuba, for it was a land that captured my heart."
