Stapleton Event Raises $24,000 for Performing Arts Endowment at Hudson Valley Community College

The Maureen Stapleton Theatre Fund, a performing arts endowment launched in October at Hudson Valley Community College, has raised $24,000, President John L. Buono announced today. Nearly 150 guests gathered at Hudson Valley Community College to honor Maureen Stapleton, the esteemed Tony, Oscar and Emmy award-winning actress, and to launch an endowment fund for the performing arts on campus. Initial contributions to the fund will be used for capital renovations to the college's Maureen Stapleton Theatre, dedicated with the actress present in 1981. The endowment also will be used to expand performing arts programming and opportunities at the college, including educational opportunities for local children.

"We are thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for this important fund, thanks to great community support for the college and the arts," said Cultural Affairs Coordinator Siobhan Quinn.

The college hosted a cocktail reception on Oct. 26 in the lobby of the Bulmer Telecommunications Center on the Hudson Valley campus. Activities during the evening included a silent auction featuring arts items and memorabilia, dramatic presentations by resident theater group The Players, and live piano music. Guests had the opportunity to greet Miss Stapleton at the event, which was emceed by John McLoughlin from WTEN-Channel 10. President Buono unveiled a plaque commemorating Miss Stapleton's impressive career that will be hung in the theater, and presented a video about the Maureen Stapleton Theatre. Members of Miss Stapleton's family as well as childhood friends were in attendance to celebrate the occasion.

Maureen Stapleton was born and raised in Troy, where she frequented theaters including Proctor's Theater downtown, before launching her acting career.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
