Hughes, of Colonie, was a Dean's List student in the Criminal Justice Department at Hudson Valley. She graduated from the college in December 2003.
She is a 2000 graduate of Shaker High School. She plans to continue her education in psychology and criminal justice at the University at Albany.
The John L. Buono Award for Civic Engagement, named for the college's fifth president, who retired December 2003, is awarded to a graduating senior or recent graduate of the college who has shown a commitment to community service through volunteer work. Hughes' volunteer work is related to her interest in criminal justice.
The award was handed out at a conference on service learning held at the college on April 16.
Hudson Valley Community College Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation formed in 1983 to philanthropically support the college's mission. Gifts to the Foundation from alumni, businesses, faculty, staff and friends are used to enhance programs, facilities and scholarship opportunities at the college.
Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 11,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
