Edward Mayer to Speak at Hudson Valley

CONTACT: Steve Mullen (518) 629-8063 or Tara Fracalossi (518) 629-8006
FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Wednesday, September 10, 2003

Edward Mayer, a professor of art at the University at Albany, will talk about his artwork at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17 in Hudson Valley Community College's Bulmer Telecommunications Center auditorium.

The lecture is part of the Open(ed) Spaces exhibit, which involves nine artists that have placed site-related and site-specific works on the Hudson Valley campus. Open(ed) Spaces, which is a part of Hudson Valley's 50th anniversary celebration, will be shown from September 28 to April 30, 2004. A reception to kick off the exhibit is scheduled for 5 p.m. on September 28 in Hudson Valley's Teaching Gallery.

Mayer's installation, entitled Line(ed), takes specific architectural details as its starting point. He will construct three steel mesh columns and fit them along a grid of windows between the functioning structural columns of Hudson Valley's Guenther Enrollment Services Center. Made of readily available ‘non-art,' non-architecture' materials, the work is light, airy and delicate. Mayer's new columns hold no weight but rather serve to call viewers' attention to the expanse of space, air and light that permeates the sweeping atrium of the building.

Mayer earned his bachelor's degree from Brown University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. A resident of Delmar, he has exhibited at several college or university galleries including: Binghamton University; UAlbany; Hartwick College; and Rhode Island College. His works also have been shown at the Weston Art Gallery and the Chidlaw Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. His work "Twin Peeks" was commissioned by the Albany International Airport.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley has an enrollment of more than 11,000 students each year.
