James LaGatta of East Greenbush Promoted to Deputy to the President at Hudson Valley

James LaGatta of East Greenbush has been promoted to the position of Deputy to the President at Hudson Valley Community College.

"I am pleased to be working more closely than ever with Jim," said Hudson Valley Community College President John L. Buono. "He has proven his talents and merit over 31 years of faithful service to Hudson Valley."

LaGatta, a Hudson Valley alumnus, has been employed at the college since 1969. From 1992-2000, LaGatta served as dean of the college's School of Health Sciences, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and School of Business. LaGatta also served as Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs since 1998. Prior to that, he served as Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry from 1977-1998, and was a Chemistry department instructor for 1969-1977.

In his new position, LaGatta reports directly to the president of the college and is a member of the president's senior staff. He acts as the quality assurance officer for the college, ensuring that goals and objectives are met in a timely, cost-effective manner. He is responsible for overseeing a variety of critical procedures designed to maintain the integrity of the college. LaGatta also will actively promote the college by participation in community, state, regional and national activities related to the goals of the college.

LaGatta earned a Bachelor of Science degree at SUNY Oneonta and a master's degree at Union College. In July 1999, LaGatta was honored by the Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD).

Other accolades include a 1999 Army Achievement Medal for Civilian Service; the Advocate/Educator of the Year through the National Rehabilitation Association in 1998; the Disabled Student Service Award of Excellence in 1996, and a SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Professional Services in 1992.

LaGatta is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the international honor society of the two-year college, as well as Tau Alpha Pi.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
