FOR RELEASE: Immediate: Wednesday, May 22, 2002

An honor guard of international students attired in their native costumes will lead the procession of 460 students from the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center who will graduate Thursday evening at Hudson Valley Community College.

The student speaker for the event is Nathaniel Harvey of Albany. The 6 p.m. ceremony will take place at the McDonough Sports Complex on the college campus, and is open to the public.

The Educational Opportunity Center, located on Congress Street in Troy, is a division of Hudson Valley Community College, providing vocational training, academic preparation programs, and job placement services to the Capital Region and to a seven-county area of New York State.

EOC graduates this year will receive a total of 800 certificates of completion from academic, business, service and technical programs. Ranging in age from 17 to mid-50s, the students often complete more than one program while studying at the center.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
