FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Friday, May 17, 2002

Hudson Valley Community College's Joseph L. Bruno Stadium will be visited by baseball legends Ed Kranepool (New York Mets, 1962-79) and Paul Blair (Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, 1964-80) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14. The duo, who combined to play in nearly 4,000 major-league games and 33 World Series contests, will be the special guests at a preview party for "The Joe."

This will be the Capital Region's first opportunity to take a "behind-the-scenes" tour of Hudson Valley's stadium. In addition to a "meet and greet" with Kranepool and Blair, the preview party will include a silent auction and hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are $75 each, and proceeds will benefit the President's Innovation Fund of the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation, which philanthropically supports innovative faculty; students and community outreach programs; academic-business liaisons; school-to-work projects; and capital improvements.

For more information or to RSVP, contact Deb Gardner at (518) 629-8071.

Kranepool and Blair played against each other in the 1969 World Series, which the Mets won, defeating the Orioles in five games.

Kranepool, a first baseman and outfielder, signed with the Mets out of James Madison High School in the Bronx, and he retired as the Mets' all-time leader in eight offensive categories. For his career, he batted .261 with 118 home runs and 614 runs batted in. Perhaps his most memorable moment came in game three of the 1969 World Series, when belted a home run to help the Mets triumph, 5-0.

A speedy centerfielder, Blair played for the Orioles during the first 12 years of his career, finishing among Baltimore's all-time top five in 12 offensive categories. No slouch in the field, Blair also won eight Gold Gloves. He had 171 career stolen bases, and went 9-for-19 (.474 batting average) during the 1970 World Series.

In May 2001, Senator Joseph Bruno secured funds to construct a 4,500-seat baseball stadium at Hudson Valley. The $14-million Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is now ready to host the Tri-City ValleyCats, who kick off the home portion of their schedule on June 21. Hudson Valley's baseball team also played its home games at "The Joe" this past season.
