Baseball Clinics On Tap

Hudson Valley Community College will host of pair of upcoming baseball clinics – a two-session pitching clinic on Sunday, Feb. 24 and a hitting clinic on Sunday, March 3. Both clinics will take place in the gymnasium at Hudson Valley's McDonough Complex.

The pitching clinic – there will be two sessions, one from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and one from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – is being coordinated by Eric Sparks, an assistant baseball coach at Hudson Valley. Sparks who pitched at Hudson Valley and SUNY Cortland before spending three years in the Montreal Expos' minor-league system, will conduct both sessions. He will focus on mechanics and velocity. Participants will be videotaped and they will leave with their videotapes. The cost is $15.

Mickey Brantley will conduct the hitting clinic from 6 to 9 p.m. A Catskill native who serves as coordinator of minor-league hitting instruction for the New York Mets, Brantley played for the Seattle Mariners from 1986 to 1989, hitting .259 with 32 home runs and 125 RBI. The cost to participate in the hitting clinic is $40 per person, and each participant will receive a T-shirt.

In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game. Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status, 20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American status.
