Why Service Learning

Research on service learning (from the American Association for Community Colleges) reveals the following:

  • 90 percent of students agreed that academically-based service helped them see how course subject matter can be used in everyday life.

  • 70 percent thought that service learning helped them better understand required reading & lectures.

  • Given a choice between a course that offered service learning versus one that didn’t, 82 percent of students who had taken a service learning course preferred to do so again.

  • 77 percent agreed that service learning should be practiced in more classes at their institutions.

  • 80 percent of students express a greater interest in doing service in their community after their service learning experience.
