Scholarship Opportunities for Currently Enrolled Students
The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation is proud to offer the following scholarship opportunities for currently enrolled students.

Whatever your course of study, there's a good chance that we have a scholarship that matches your interests. Some scholarships are limited to students in a particular program and others are available to students in any course of study. Some scholarships require second essays or letters of verification from other entities. Please take time to review the list to see which scholarships might be right for you.

While not required for all scholarships, most of the available scholarships do require that applicants have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the college by the scholarship application deadline. Therefore, it is recommended that all applicants have a completed FAFSA on file before applying for scholarships to ensure that you are considered for all scholarships for which you might be eligible.

Scholarships will be applied toward your Fall 2014 semester bill, unless otherwise noted.

Please note: All scholarships are subject to available funding; if funding is unavailable, recipients will not be selected for the scholarship.

The deadline for submitting scholarship applications is Friday, March 28, 2014.

All applicants must:

  • Be students who are enrolled in or who have applied to a degree program at Hudson Valley Community College for Fall 2014.

  • Submit a one page essay of approximately 250 words describing educational and career objectives and how receiving a scholarship will help achieve these goals.

  • Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to applying for scholarships. The form can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

  • It is recommended that you check with the Mastrangelo Financial Aid Center to verify you have a complete and up-to-date FAFSA on file before applying for scholarships.

  • If selected to receive a scholarship, you must sign a scholarship acceptance form and write a thank you letter to the donor(s) who provided funds for your scholarship. Acceptance forms and thank you letters must be received by Friday, June 6, 2014. Failure to submit these items will result in the revocation of the scholarship offer.

If you have questions about the scholarship application process, please e-mail scholarships@hvcc.edu or call the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation at (518) 629-8012. You also may want to check out our frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions for Currently Enrolled Students

Q: When is the scholarship application deadline?
A: Friday, March 28, 2014.

Q: How do I apply for a Foundation Scholarship?
A: Returning students must apply online:

  1. Login to WIReD (www.hvcc.edu/wired) beginning January 2014.
  2. Click on “Enrollment, Financial Aid, Student Accounts and Student Services” tab.
  3. Click on “Financial Aid” link.
  4. Click on “Foundation Scholarships.”

Q: Does the scholarship application process only happen once per year?
A: Yes. The Foundation has streamlined the process to once per academic year. The online application goes live at the beginning of the spring semester, with a mid-February deadline.

Q: Who can apply for Foundation Scholarships?
A: Both incoming and returning students. Most scholarships require that students have a completed FAFSA on file with the college. Per Foundation policy, scholarships are available to US citizens and permanent residents.

Q: Can you tell me the amount of X scholarship?
A: Scholarship amounts range from $100 to $2,000 or more. Approximate award amounts are listed after each scholarship name: $ = $500 or less; $$ = $500-$999; $$$ = $1,000 or more

Q: Will receiving a scholarship from the Foundation affect my Financial Aid?
A: The Mastrangelo Financial Aid Center takes into account all funds that are available to you (for education). Grant and scholarship aid that does not have to be repaid is applied to your account first and may therefore reduce any loan amounts you may have been offered, but it does not change or negate your eligibility for financial aid.

Q: The online application program indicates that I am eligible for 4 scholarships, but I know I meet the criteria for only 2 scholarships. What should I do?
A: Apply for all scholarships that are listed. The way the program is written, you must apply for all scholarships even if you know you don't meet the criteria.

Q: I started the process and was eligible for 10 scholarships but only applied for 3. I went back in and now I don't see the other 7 scholarships. What should I do?
A: If you started to apply for a scholarship but did not finish, it will show up as incomplete. Go in and apply for that scholarship (even if you think you aren't really eligible) and then the remaining scholarships will show up again.

Q: When will I know whether or not I've received a scholarship?
A: Recipients will be notified by early May so they have time to accept or decline the award. You must sign a scholarship acceptance form and write a thank you note in order for your scholarship to be activated for the 2014-15 academic year. Signed acceptance forms and thank you notes are due by June 6.

PLEASE NOTE: Awards will be applied to the Fall 2014 semester unless otherwise noted.
