Coco Merenson performs one of the most dynamic traditional sounds of the Caribbean: son. The band's frequent appearances at festivals and concerts have earned it recognition as New York's leading ensemble that combines traditional roots and contemporary sounds. As a young man Juan "Coco" de Jesus enjoyed listening to son music from Cuba that was widely popular and influential in the entire Spanish Caribbean, particularly in Santo Domingo. He notes that he was particularly inspired by the lyricism of the slower ballads. When he came to New York, Coco found that most musicians wanted to play merengue and bachata, but very few were interested in Cuban or Dominican son. Fearing that the style would soon be forgotten among Dominicans, he sought to find a group to carry on the tradition. The group is composed of bass, guitars, saxophone; trumpet; bongos; percussion; and vocals.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training.
