The Center for Energy Efficiency and Building Science (CEEBS), a division of Hudson Valley Community College's Workforce Development Institute, is now offering a new course for those interested in starting a career in the home energy efficiency field.

"Basic Air Sealing and Insulation" will be offered at Northeast Career Planning, 339 Broadway, Menands. This four-day, 28-hour course, which features both classroom and lab instruction, teaches students how to install air sealing and insulation treatments that increase a home's energy efficiency. The course teaches the basic skills necessary for weatherizing a building and provides the background necessary to become a highly qualified entry-level installer.

Increases in home energy audits through NYSERDA's New York State's Green Jobs/Green New York program and Home Performance with Energy StarŪ program are expected to lead to nearly 2,000 jobs for insulation and energy air sealing technicians in the state.

Following completion of the course, students may choose to take a certification exam offered by the Building Performance Institute.

CEEBS provides contractors, builders and consumers with a series of sequential training courses on how to diagnose and repair homes to make them more energy efficient. Funded by contracts from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and a Community-Based Job Training grant from the United States Department of Labor, CEEBS manages 12 Energy Smart Learning Centers across the state.

CEEBS courses also include "Basics of Building Science (online)," "Building Analyst," "Envelope Professional," "Heating Professional," "Cooling Professional," and "HERS Rater." Students who successfully complete these sequential courses may test for Building Professional Institute (BPI) certification.

For more information, contact CEEBS at ceebs@hvcc.edu or (518) 629-4111.

The cost of the "Basic Air Sealing and Insulation" course is $1,250. NYSERDA reimburses 50 percent of tuition upon completion of the course to qualified students. This incentive is being offered by NYSERDA for a limited time and is subject to change at NYSERDA's discretion. An additional $550 is charged for those wishing to complete the BPI certification practical exam.
