FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010

Hudson Valley Community College's Workforce Development Institute will offer two upcoming courses for those interested in beginning a career in pharmacy as pharmacy technicians.

A 108-hour classroom-based Pharmacy Technician Training course will begin Oct. 26 and run through Feb. 4, 2011 at the college's Albany Extension Center, located at 175 Central Avenue. The course, which is offered on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, includes an 18-hour internship in a local pharmacy.

Also beginning Oct. 26 is an online Pharmacy Technician Training program, which provides students with the flexibility to learn on their own schedule. Online students have access to email and discussion boards for communication with the instructor and other students.

Both courses are designed to prepare students for the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).

Pharmacy technicians prepare and package medications and also record and bill prescriptions in retail and hospital pharmacies. The position requires careful attention to detail and excellent customer service and communication skills. Technicians who pass the PTCE become eligible for lead technician positions, and in some cases, continue their education to pursue careers as pharmacists.
