FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:Thursday, August 26, 2010

The Teaching Gallery at Hudson Valley Community College is pleased to present an exhibition of recent drawings and welded sculpture by artist Chris Duncan.

Chris Duncan: Recent Work will be on view from Thursday, Sept. 16 to Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010. A gallery talk with the artist will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 3 to 4 p.m. and will be followed by a reception in the gallery.

Assembled from an accumulation of found bits of steel picked up and saved over many years, Chris Duncan's sculpture can be viewed as three-dimensional collages that search out combinations of line and volume, gravity and balance.

For both his sculpture and collaged drawings, the physical process of addition and subtraction is central to Duncan's work. The result is always something unimagined and newly found that seeks a balance between structure and expressiveness. The tensions between bulk and balance, rough and refined, the "raw and the cooked" give Duncan's work a sense of motion and physical energy that ennobles the found bits of material that comprise the work.

A native of New York City, Duncan holds a bachelor's degree from Colby College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the New York Studio School. He has exhibited his work widely and has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His work was last presented at the Teaching Gallery in the 2003 exhibition titled Open(ed) Spaces. Duncan is represented by Bruno Marina Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery and Rico, all in New York City. He is a professor of fine arts at Union College in Schenectady and lives and works in Canajoharie.

The Teaching Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Administration Building. All exhibits are installed and supported by students in the Gallery Management program. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday, 1 - 7 p.m. and Saturday, noon -4 p.m.For more information, visit www.hvcc.edu/teachinggallery.
