Hudson Valley Community College Foundation Awards $32,000 in Scholarships

The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation awarded $32,000 in scholarships to 33 Hudson Valley students who are pursuing degrees in a variety of programs, including Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Civil Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Dental Hygiene and Physical Education.

Hudson Valley Community College Foundation scholarships are awarded based on a variety of criteria, including need, academic performance, civic involvement and academic program; the awards ranged from $200 to full tuition, books and fees.

The scholarships were presented at the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation's semi-annual scholarship reception, which was held in the McDonough Field House. The awards will be put toward the students' fall semester educational expenses.

Scholarship recipients are listed below by county of residence, including the student's major and name of scholarship(s) awarded. The county breakdown is as follows: Albany County – 7 recipients; Columbia County – 1 recipient; Fulton – 1 recipient; Greene County – 1 recipient; Montgomery County – 1 recipient; Orange County – 1 recipient; Rensselaer County – 10 recipients; Saratoga County – 7 recipients; Schenectady County – 2 recipients; Washington County – 1 recipient; and Bennington, VT – 1 recipient.

The Spring 2010 scholarship recipients are:

Albany County

  • Gabriel Cruz-Allen of Guilderland, an Individual Studies student, received the John H. and Hazel Hayes Atwater Memorial Scholarship.
  • Jonathon DeSarno of Greenville, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • Bonnie Durocher of Menands, a Nursing student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • Jennifer Kiehle of Cohoes, a Nursing student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • Jarad Margiasso of Ravena, a Civil Engineering Technology student, received the Dr. Leonard Spiegel Memorial Scholarship.
  • Vanessa Spickerman of Latham, a Physical Education student, received the WE@HVCC Scholarship.
  • Robert Stranahan of Colonie, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.

Columbia County

  • Maria Dilis of East Chatham, an Early Childhood Education student, received the Dr. Frank J. Morgan Jr. Memorial Scholarship and the Rev. Dr. Dennis L. Nagi Scholarship.

Fulton County

  • Holly Duesler of Johnston, a Dental Hygiene student, received the First Advantage Dental Scholarship and the WE@HVCC Scholarship.

Greene County

  • Kathryn Mulcare of Durham, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.

Montgomery County

  • Andrea Bronner of Amsterdam, a Civil Engineering Technology student, received the John and Marguerite LaPan Memorial Scholarship.

Orange County

  • Thomas Stoddard of Montgomery, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.

Rensselaer County

  • Michael Bermas of Averill Park, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • Darrell Brown of Troy, a Business Administration student, received the Paul and Gloria Mahoney Leadership Scholarship.
  • Carly Bruso of Troy, a Nursing student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • Ana Gaylo of Buskirk, a Dental Hygiene student, received the First Advantage Dental Scholarship.
  • Jessica Halleran of Berlin, an Individual Studies student, received the Ray Richardson Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Frank J. Morgan Jr.
  • Anthony Hammersmith of Petersburgh, a Construction Technology student, received the Abbott L. Wiley Scholarship Sponsored by Wiley Bros., Inc.
  • Ashley Lewis of Wynantskill, an Individual Studies student, received the Eugenia M. Staerker Individual Studies Scholarship.
  • Ryan Naccarato of Troy, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.
  • JoMichelle Scott of Troy, a Business Administration student, received the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators Scholarship.
  • Kevin Wynne of Nassau, an Engineering Science student, received the Donald D. and Mary E. Heckelman Memorial Scholarship.

Saratoga County

  • Peter Albanese of Charlton, an Engineering Science student, received the Lockheed Martin Scholarship.
  • Janet Glaude of Mechanicville, a Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science student, received the WE@HVCC Scholarship.
  • Bethany Goodrich of Ballston Lake, a Civil Engineering Technology student, received the John and Marguerite LaPan Memorial Scholarship.
  • Erik Hjeltnes of Rexford, a Biological Sciences student, received the Lois and John H. Atwater Jr. Memorial Scholarship.
  • Karl Hoenzsch of Stillwater, a Liberal Arts Honors student, received the Jason Irving Doeg Memorial Scholarship.
  • Mathieu Strait of Ballston Spa, an Individual Studies student, received the Elizabeth Defeo Memorial Scholarship.
  • Martelle Twitty of Clifton Park, a Dental Hygiene student, received the First Advantage Dental Scholarship.

Schenectady County

  • Jon Ruscitto of Scotia, a Business Administration student, received the Business Administration Faculty Scholarship.
  • Brian Terpening of Schenectady, an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic student, received the Michael J. Torello and Janet Atwater Scholarship and the WE@HVCC Scholarship.

Washington County

  • Sherman Trinkle of Buskirk, a Physical Education student, received the Otto V. Guenther Scholarship.

Bennington County, Vermont
