The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation announced today that a new scholarship fund has been established in honor of Elizabeth DeFeo, a lifelong resident of Schenectady, NY. The new fund was established by Dan and Tracy Aunkst of Clifton Park in honor of their Aunt Elizabeth's love of learning and belief in education.

"Sharing her love of learning with family and friends, Aunt Elizabeth valued the importance of education and the continuation of learning throughout life," stated Mr. Aunkst. "It was her kindness and generosity that made an indelible impression on those who knew her. Through her example she taught me that everyone had a responsibility to give back. By establishing the Elizabeth M. DeFeo scholarship we can help a student pursue his or her educational goals."

This new scholarship will provide financial support to a Hudson Valley Community College Student. The student selected must demonstrate a strong determination to succeed academically and preference is given to students with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.75. The first award will be for $500.

"Hudson Valley students are so appreciative of scholarship support, and establishing a scholarship fund is a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one," said Foundation President Sarah Boggess. "We are very thankful for the generosity of the family and friends of Elizabeth DeFeo."

Anyone interested in making a donation to the Elizabeth DeFeo scholarship fund or establishing a new scholarship can call the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation at (518) 629-8012 or visit www.hvcc.edu/scholarships. The Aunkst's have committed to matching donations made during the 2009-10 academic year up to $3,000.

The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation formed in 1983 to philanthropically support the college's mission. Gifts to the Foundation from alumni, corporations and friends are used to enhance programs, facilities and scholarship opportunities at the college.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Liberal Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Business; and workforce and academic preparation programs offered by the Educational Opportunity Center.
