FOR RELEASE: Monday, April 20, 2009

The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation today announced that it has received an annual commitment from Ellis Hospital to establish a new $1,000 scholarship for second year students pursuing a degree in the Respiratory Therapy program at Hudson Valley Community College.

Ed Stomski, Ellis Hospital’s director of respiratory care, said, “This is a unique way for us to help a student earning a respiratory therapy degree and also help the hospital in attracting skilled workers in the field. I am proud to work with such talented and generous group of professionals. Their support of the hospital in giving back to the profession is truly remarkable and unprecedented.”

This year, Hudson Valley Community College student Ashley Ormerod was chosen as the first recipient of the scholarship. She was chosen on the basis of her academic standing, the merits of her scholarship and essay, along with the recommendation by Patty Hyland, chair of the college’s Cardiorespiratory and Emergency Medicine department.

The Ellis Hospital Respiratory Scholarship is being established on behalf of charitable contributions made to the Ellis Hospital Foundation. The idea for the scholarship came from employees in Ellis Hospital’s Respiratory Care department who know firsthand how hard it is to recruit respiratory therapists given the national shortage of these health care workers.

“Hudson Valley students are so appreciative of scholarship support and in these tough economic times, we are deeply appreciative of Ellis Hospital’s desire to assist students pursuing a respiratory therapy degree,” said Foundation President Sarah M. Boggess, who also serves as the college’s vice president for Institutional Advancement.

The Hudson Valley Community College Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable corporation formed in 1983 to philanthropically support the college’s mission. Gifts to the Foundation from alumni, corporations and friends are used to enhance programs, facilities and scholarship opportunities at the college. Anyone interested in establishing a scholarship can call the Foundation at (518) 629-8012.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 65,000 alumni.
