Hudson Valley Community College graduate Darnell Stapleton, who played for the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers this season, was honored upon his return to campus. With him are County Executive Kathy Jimino, County Legislature Chairman Neil Kelleher and President Andrew Matonak.

Super Bowl Champion and Hudson Valley alumnus Darnell Stapleton returned to the Troy campus today for a series of events in honor of "Darnell Stapleton Day." Hudson Valley welcomed Stapleton back to campus to celebrate his recent Super Bowl victory as well as his academic and athletic successes.

Hudson Valley Community College President Drew Matonak and Hudson Valley's current football team welcomed Stapleton back to campus with several events throughout the day in his honor.

At a Noon press conference, Stapleton was presented with his #63 jersey from his Hudson Valley football days. In addition Kathy Jimino, Rensselaer County Executive and Neil Kelleher, Chairman of the Rensselaer County Legislature, presented Stapleton with a resolution "Commending Darnell Stapleton of the Pittsburgh Steelers Upon His Outstanding Accomplishments," which was adopted at the March 10, 2009 meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature.

Stapleton started at center and tackle for two seasons at Hudson Valley Community College, which captured the conference and Region III Championship in 2004. He was selected to the First Team All-Northeast Football Conference and named preseason NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Stapleton finished his career as the only player in Hudson Valley history to start 21 consecutive games. Darnell is the starting guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was the starting center on the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights Football team. He signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on NFL Draft Day 2007.
