Hudson Valley Community College to Offer Biotechnology Certificate Program

Hudson Valley Community College will offer a one-year certificate program in biotechnology for those interested in developing or expanding a career as a laboratory technician in the medical research, pharmaceutical or biotechnology fields. Courses in the program are set to begin in the Fall 2009 semester.

The program, which can be completed in two semesters, provides specialized training in applied techniques of cell culture, immunology, analytical chemistry, molecular biology, biological imaging, and analytical cytology. Those entering the program must have successfully completed several college-level mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics courses as prerequisites.

The certificate program is also ideal for those who have completed a bachelor's degree in biology and are looking for practical skills that can be applied in the workplace, according to Dr. Peter Schaefer, the chairperson for the college's Department of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Entry-level careers in the biotechnology sector are expected to grow faster than average according to the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rapid development of new genetic and biotechnology processes continues to fuel the need for qualified people in this industry.

Dr. Schaefer said that the certificate courses are lab-intensive and taught by Ph.D.s with extensive laboratory and research experience. Graduates of the program will be well-equipped with current technological skills and able to be assimilated into a regional laboratory with little additional training.

Hudson Valley Community College also offers a two-year associate's degree in biotechnology which includes all of the prerequisite courses, as well as a two-year associate's degree in biological science, which parallels the first two years of a bachelor's degree in biology.
