FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Monday, April 30, 2007
Former Hudson Valley Community College student-athlete Rashad Barksdale was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 National Football League Draft on Sunday.
Barksdale was an outfielder on Hudson Valley's baseball team in 2003 and 2004 before transferring to the University at Albany where he played two more years of baseball. After he was finished with his baseball career, Barksdale walked on to Albany’s football team and immediately earned a starting cornerback spot for the Great Danes.
Barksdale is a 6-1, 220 pound defensive back and will report to the Eagles' mini-camp on May 11.
Barksdale is the first former Hudson Valley student-athlete to be drafted into the NFL since Jay Kearney was a sixth round selection by the Green Bay Packers in 1994. Barksdale can become the fourth for Hudson valley student-athlete to play a game in the NFL, joining Kearney, Mark Catano and Leander Knight.
