On Thursday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m., close to a dozen local children and local seniors will demonstrate computer programs as officials from the Capital District YMCA, Verizon and Hudson Valley gather to announce and celebrate a new gift to the East Greenbush YMCA. The gathering will take place in Room 1051 on the first floor of the Bulmer Telecommunications on the Hudson Valley Community College campus at 80 Vandenburgh Ave., Troy.

Hudson Valley Community College has loaned 10 computers to the East Greenbush YMCA. The Verizon Foundation has provided a $100,000 grant for software, a link to Hudson Valley and the East Greenbush School District, and training money. Hudson Valley will serve as the vehicle for distance learning programs and continuing education at the new YMCA computer labs. The East Greenbush YMCA will be providing remedial math and reading courses to kids in afterschool childcare programs along with supervised recreational computer use for teens. Additional courses will be offered during the day for YMCA members, the seniors at the proposed Eddy residential facility next door, and any interested members of the public who register.

"We are thrilled to help make great new opportunities available to the East Greenbush YMCA," stated Rich Amadon of Verizon. "This new computer laboratory will enable the Y to provide classes for kids, seniors and the general community."

The line-up of speakers at the press conference will be as follows: John L. Buono, President of Hudson Valley Community College; John Flynn, President and CEO of the Capital District YMCA; and Rich Amadon, Regional Director of Community Affairs and Economic Development Upstate at Verizon and General Chair of the YMCA East Greenbush Capital Campaign.

The Capital District YMCA is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. YMCA facilities, which serve more than 34,000 members, are located in Albany, Empire State Plaza, Guilderland, Mont Pleasant Commons, Glenville, Schenectady, Troy and Southern Saratoga County, and its camping branch Camp Chingachook on Lake George. The YMCA also has 51 childcare sites that serve over 2,400 children daily.

For over 150 years, the Capital District YMCA has been meeting the most important needs of our children, families and communities, by providing complete health, educational and recreational needs across the Capital Region. The Capital District YMCA takes great pride in our mission, and the fact that because of the Y, the Capital Region is a better place to live and work.

The East Greenbush YMCA has successfully raised $1.3 million of a $3.5 million capital campaign, and will break ground on the new East Greenbush facility on April 1, 2001. The projected opening date for the new building is January 1, 2002.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
